I do not have a CEL condition, currently. Just the stupid O/D flashing and hard shifts.

I think I did have the wiring harness replaced under recall. Twice. Same thing with the blower switch. Then the water pump impeller (sp?) broke. Now this.

Where is the speed sensor located approximately? I have been looking for loose/disconnected wires but have had no luck so far.

I just found this link:

http://www.chat-tec.com/automotive/Autocourses/212/cd4ep.htm

Harsh upshifts and O/D light flashing directly correlated to a bad TSS.

I *think* it is right on top of the Tranny under the Battery. I don't have my book with me, sorry. I'll try to get back on tonight with more info.

Thanks. I really appreciate your help. I am gonna do a Google search to see if I can find out where the sensor is located.

If I am correct, it is actually on the side of the tranny, facing the front driver's side tire. I bought a subscription to www.alldatadiy.com and got my info from them. The resistance is supposed to be 140-290 ohms and the part number is F7RP-7M101-AA.

If the sensor has a white body, you have a newer version (old bodies were black) and this newer version has some known issues. Old magnet could lift 1.25 pound gears...new magnet can barely lift 5 oz. set of nail clippers. Etc. I am hoping this sensor is the cause of my problems.

I had the same problem about a month ago...at about 64,500miles. I was stuck in horrible Washington DC Beltway traffic and then all of as sudden I started getting the hard shifting and O/D light flashing plus the CEL on. It turned out to be a bad torque convertor. I had it replaced and all is fine.

Luckily I purchased the Ford ESP...it finally is paying dividends.

This is the same thing my 99 Contour SE sport has been doing. The warranty expired and about 300 miles later the problem started. I fixed it with a stick of dymanite placed strategically under the hood.....BOOM no more problem......no really....took it to Auto Zone to check the codes. There was no codes and the guy said it would be best to take to dealer.....I think I will just trade it in for a civic or something LOL
If you get yours fixed without replacing the entire car let me know!
Thanks!

Well, today, I drove home from work. The car exhibited the hard shift for the first two or three miles, and then it disappeared. The O/D light did not flash at all. I wonder if the computer reset actually did the trick.

Well...the darn thing is up to its old tricks again this morning. Obviously the computer reset did not work. She is gonna go in to the dealer asap.

I reset the computer and the hard shift started, then the CEL came back on, and the hard shifting went away. Taking it to Autozone to get the code read.

I'd love to know what the dealer says when you get it there. I've been to two different ones here and both are 'Mystique' / 'Contour' challenged.

Good Luck!
