I am experiencing hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. My vehicle is a 97 Mystique GS.

I have noticed other users suggesting that hard shifting could be resolved by resetting the computer. How is this done, exactly? Do I merely disconnect the battery? I hope it isn't much more involved than that.

The easiest way is to just disconnect the battery for about 30 mins. You can pull a couple of fuses and get the same result, but it seems that the fuse numbers vary from contique to contique and year to year so I would just disconnect the battery.

The computer can be reset by disconnecting the battery Neg. terminial for a few seconds. You can also pull/replace fuse 4 & 11 in engine caompartment fuse box which will avoid wiping out your clock and radio station settings, May want to check your tranny fluid level and make sure it is full idling in Park.   In my '06 Mystique, it's fuses 9 and 11 that you pull to reset the PCM.

Check that again. #9 looks like a relay. #4 is a 3A fuse, #11 is a 20A fuse. Both are labeled EEC fuses in the manual. The difference arises with 99+ CDWs because they use a different style fuse (it's smaller than pre-99s).

Also, my manual is slightly misprinted in that the columns don't line up exactly. There was an extra line return and that threw the column off.

yes, but it's safer to disconnect the negative.

Not so, relays have R in front of number.

My '98 owner's guide(with correction page glued in place) lists fuses 4,9 and 11 as feeding the EEC.

Fuse 11 feeds PCM (EEC) memory circuits.
Fuse 9 feeds PCM relay contact which in turn feeds power to PCU.
Fuse 4 feeds PCM relay coil, but only if ignition on. Pulling it is therefore actually redundant if fuse 9 is already pulled or if ignition is off.

Above for '98 models. As was posted earlier pulling bat neg for acouple of minutes is easier to communicate and avoids any model confusion re fuse numbers.
