Alright, after doing a 2-3 shift at around 5000 RPM I think something broken in my shifter. The shifter will move up and down fine but will not go from side to side. I was able to limp the car home in 4th gear. I can't get it to go into 3rd it just stays in 4th. I popped the shifter boot off to take a look but really did not know what to look for. There are no weird noises coming from the car, the damn shifter just won't move side to side only up and down! Please help!

yes I did Hector. After talking to Terry this morning, by what other people told me, and what I think happened it is not anything internal. Just a problem with the shifter. Terry's work is fine, he even tried to get me upgrade the shifter tower which might be the culprite. I'm going to take a better look at it this afternoon.

Sounds like you have the same problem I've been dealing with this whole summer.

$2K later and it's fixed by replacing the trans.

In my trans I had was a bolt on the shift selector that broke. The broken bolt is what gave me problems pushing the shifter side to side. Note, when you push your shift lever side to side you are lifting (push shifter right for 3, 4, 5 & R) and lowering (rest position for 1 & 2) the shift selector in the trans. The broken bolt some how hung up left right movement but after a while shook loose but I was stuck in 4th.

At first I retap the hole and put in a larger hardened bolt;
nevertheless, I had the same failure once again in about 3 months.

From Dealers and Terry Haines I've learned there is a 2001 Shift Selector fix for this issue.

Early next year I plan to have Terry do the 2001 shift selector up date and Quaife.

A quick update on this one, Neal called me again and ,with the help of a friend,removed the ally tower to find that ,as predicted, the guide rails /'hooks' on the selector had bent apart stopping the linkage comming out of gear...Neal will be getting a 2002 Focus shiter tower & rod ends from HMS Inc in a couple of weeks....watch out for tose 'fast' shiftes guys, either you can bend the hooks or ,worse case shear that damm bolt....upgrade the tower asap for your own piece of mind...

Just what Terry said. Everything is fine...I just shifted too hard and broke the hooks on the selector. Car drives great now and I will be getting the Focus shifter tower in a couple of weeks so this won't happen again. Should have gotten it when I had the other work done a while back like Terry told me too.

the easiest way to do it and cheapest iv found is to have terry take a post 2000 mtx 75 form a mondeo, new or used, fit a quaife diff., and a shifter tower off the ford focus...that will eliminate the breaking off of the bolt, the gears, and the shifter...I just talked to him about it today... you'll have a very powerfull but not quite stock tranny. And its bad ass.....I should get mine in about 2 weeks.
