I was going to say that it might be tires since you compared it to the same noise as driving on a wet road! I'm glad to see my deductive reasoning skills still function. Glad to hear you figured it out!

The strangest part of (at least for me) was that it wasn't a noise that I heard at constant speed - just acceleration. I guess it has to do with the siping or Blizzak compound.....

Belt pulleys bearings also commonly whine at certain revs and can make wushing noises

Those on the early cars tend to suffer wear as well
