I have a 97 ford contour, auto. It has just 47K miles. Once in a while the overdrive light flashes and a jerk is felt when it changes gear from 1st to 2nd. It last for a day or two and then goes away. Does any body have idea what is going on and its solution

I have had the same problem since I bought my Contour three weeks ago. ('98 Contour GL V6 ATX) Ford wants to rebuild the transmission for $2,200 and it only has 25,000 miles on it. I'm now getting a second opinion. The code shows speed sensor problem but already replaced that and MLPS sensor and still have the prob. If all else fails, I'm going to fix it with a sledge hammer. Will let you know.

I have had the same problem for several months. It comes and goes, I do think it is a solenoid being flakey or this tranny would have died by now-
Car works and don't really feel like getting fixed now-

Do a search ATX error code 740 alot of info from 9/28

Thanks for all the info!!
ya, when I took to the dealer and asked him to check the transmission he told me similar things.. I have problem with the torque converter and the clutch plate. and the only solution is to get a new transmission. Currently I can't get one because its lot of money and the car is no more under warranty. How long do you think that I can run the car before the transmission collapses completely Is there anything cheaper solution. One more question... when Ford rebuilds the transmission, do they give any sort of warranty... what if it starts happening again with the new transmission

I would talk to several tranny shops before doing anything. Ive been driving like this for several months- hope to fix it by year end-found a shop that will disable electronics to test shifting to be sure it is a solenoid

This is a COMMON problem with CD4E ATX.
I would see if your dealer would be willing to replace the transaxle for HALF of what they are asking.

My transaxle went at 31,000 miles and the replacement transaxle has been acting up for the last several months. It too has over 30,000 miles on it. I can't wait until I get a trouble code. This tranny problem su*ks.

Disabling the electronics won't help.
If you disable the electronics, the transmission won't shift.
There are no manual valves to shift gears. Only solenoids.
