That was a big problem with 98.5 and up SE's. They were horrible about options. Pre-98 SE's came mostly loaded and was darn near the only way to get the fold down.I see 98.5-up SE's all over that are running around with hubcaps and a 4-banger in them. That isn't a real SE, that was Fords joke to sell a fender badge or something . It isn't hard to switch over to fold-downs though. you just need a new seatback with the hardware. Check the boneyard.

I know, they are giving my 99 v6 SE a bad name!!!! I believe the 4 banger is the SE and the v6 is actually called the SE Sport

I've seen SE Sports on the road with no 24V emblem on the back and they sounded like Zetecs. I think the Sport option might of been tach, wheels, suspension, Spoiler, but not engine. Seen Mystique Sport also...4 cyl..
Ford has a wacky system on model names/options.
FWIW, the Sport PAckage on my Escort was 14 inch Alum rims, Tach, Spoiler. On the Merc. TRacer (Escort Clone) it was callled the Trio...

Yes that must be it, I have a 99 SE that has no tach, no fold down seat, no spoiler but it does have the suspension pkg because it had 15" alloy wheels and the HO Zetec. It also has tilt, cruise, int wipers, A/C and power windows. Our car has a SE badge on the front fenders which had side marker light holes underneath. Which made it pretty convenient to put some APC marker lights in. But wow that airbox part that lives in the drivers side fender sure made it hard to fish wires through. There is no other reference to SE on the trunk, or anywhere and now the side badges are gone. It is darned confusing the way Ford names their cars, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason. Oh well, whatever they call the Mondeo, it's still a very fine automobile. Just another case of Americans not knowing what a great car is. The same Americans that will spend $45K for that ugly, transformer looking Avalanche or $30K for that two headed baby of the Aztec couldn't see what a great little car the Con/Tique was. The Europeans, who make great cars LOVE the Mondeo so what's that tell ya ? Ken, 99 SE Contour Silver Frost 2.0 Zetec Atx

At least in 97 when mine was made, the sport package could be added to the GL's. Basically it was leather wheel, spoiler and 15" alloy wheels, and it came w/ the SE suspension too. Mines a sport, but I was robbed of my leather wrapped wheel. After 98, ford got crazy and decontented everything and made these cars cheaper in quality, hence all the 98+ SE's w/ 4cyl engines and 14" hubcaps... Stupid ford...

I have a 97 GL Sport and I don't have a spoiler. Just a tach, leather gear shift knob and wheel, 15" 6 spoke alloys, suspension upgrade, and sport logo on my floor mats.
