Well, I took it in today and had the thing removed. It sounds a lot better then before, with a more aggressive growl. When I was at the shop, the guy who did the work had me rev the car to take a listen (someone who was proud of his work ). The car seemed to "crackle" at higher rpms, and he said that was the muffler. His suggestion was to put a "turbo" muffler on, which he said would really improve the sound.

Is there truth to this, or was he just trying to sell me something I don't need? He said the the whole exhaust system is in good shape and will be for a long time, so I don't have to replace the muffler if I don't want to.

I did the same thing today. Mine sounds great, but when first leaving the shop it made a sound like you described at the higher rpms. I believe this is just because it was cold, as it went away when the car warmed up. After driving around during various times of the day, I never noticed the crackling sound again, so that's my guess.

I have found the same thing with the raspy sound. My SVT exhaust is pretty raspy in the morning. When the exhaust hets warm the noise mellows out. That was one of the reasons the resonator was there.

Bob:

Check my sig for what I've got. A general statement someone made of a Magnaflow being louder than stock is not necessarily true - it all depends on the unit and the size. I replaced my stock res with an oval Magnaflow part # 14215 which is pretty well a direct replacement fit. It sounds awesome (a wee bit louder than stock) and is straight through. After searching for good music on the radio the other day, I got fed up, turned it off and just listened to the exhaust - sweeet music to my ears it is ..

I see what you both mean. I noticed the same thing, but now I'm experiencing a problem at WOT. I'm not sure if its related to the res., but its a pretty big coincidence. I started a thread in Troubleshooting here.
