Today I decided to install the SVT upper I had and change my plugs and wires and maybe crack the secondaries. All went well until I was installing the bolts for the upper.
I inserted a bolt into position 1 as per the chilton manual. I tightened it slowly with a torque wrench and "snap"...the bolt broke in half. Just a little part of it is above the lower manifold the rest is stuck below. The words that came out of my mouth I cant post here laugh

I continued the install and finished up due to the fact that I was so tired already. Now my manifold sits with only 5 bolts attaching it to the lower. Will this cause issues if I leave it for a while till I figure out what to do?

Ouch, that can't be good.

I made sure I cleaned my bolts up by spraying with WD-40 and wiping with a rag before re-inserting. They didn't want to go in smoothly until I did that. Of course, too little too late for you.

I'd be worried about the gasket leaking and leaning out your fuel charge. Lean = Boom if you aren't careful.

man that does suck! how much torque were you giving the bolts? i don't understand how it broke cause the upper intake bolts require very little torquing. you could practically tighten them down with a 3/8" ratched to a little more than hand tight.

You did realize that it was 71-106 lb-in and not lb-ft right? At about 6 lb-ft you should almost beable to remove the broken piece by hand.

Good luck

I did this on my mystique once...I rode around wiht one bolt broken for a while. I finally got one from ford like 5 months later...They aren't cheap...like $10 each. They might have to do some digging to get it for you.

That's exactly what I was thinking! eek

No possible way to break them at that torque rating!

I think it might have gone in a little funny and I might have applied a little too much torque....just a little...aparently too much. Maybe these bolts were designed to bust to prevent destroying the threads in the lower because it didn't take much.

The car runs fine...it just bugs me that that bolt is busted. A little is sticking out but I would have to remove the upper to get a good enough grip on it to even think about it. It is supposed to rain for days now and I have no garage so..it will have to stay like this for a while.

Thanks for all the constructive comments...
I have to go in for warranty work soon too....got some kinda fuel leak(not related)

10 bucks for a bolt...sheesh..thats what happens when you buy oe parts i guess.

There is also a Specific torque sequence when installing the manifold as well. Not following it can lead to manifold warpage, leaks, and worse.

Yes on torque sequence. Also the times I'e taken those bolts out, I put them in by hand with just the socket in my hand, screwing them down 'till they are just barely snug, then "wiggle" the manifold a tiny bit to make sure it's seated... THEN torque the bolts down in sequence. and i would use an antisieze on them too. (or a thin film of light grease, and torque accordingly)
