'96 Duratec ATX...seems like when I approach a stop the idle compensator gives it gas and I have to push the brakes that much harder to bring it to a complete stop. Can I lower the idle requirement or somehting? Seems like the computer thinks the engine is about to stall and gives it gas when all it's doing is driving down to a stop. A higher-stall convertor would be nice I suppose but why does it do this?

Mine had almost the same problem unexpected revving when braking upon release of the clutch (it's a stick).

Replacing the Idle Air Controller valve (IAC) fixed it.

Also, if your has not been "de-moosed" yet, get the hose as well that goes from the IAC to the intake snorkel).

A few nights ago, I had to hold a tailgating smartass at arm's-length. Trying to come down from 90mph, the car fought me. It wanted MORE speed! A day later, I was passing a Highlander coasting 10 below the limit, minding my own business, when the Yuppie-wannabe decided to give me trouble. I passed him, but then my car threw its $.02 in, continuing to rev. Both cases, I had to bear down on the brakes until the car came to its senses. IAC sticking? I'll put it on my "to-do" list.

P.S.: if the IAC is such a PITA, why isn't there a good aftermarket replacement? confused

heh, my dodge diesel pickup with AT, I have to PUSH the brake to hold it back when in gear. It shifts and accelerates to 25 mph on idle! idle=750rpm
