I know this is probably been asked a hundred time. But after "doing a search" and getting hundreds of links to read and a term paper by Contour_phoenix_when ( and yes I read the the whole thing).
I have a 96 GL ATX. I have been getting the O/D off light blicking and today I got it again. But I also got CEL. When I got got of my car I felt a lot of heat from under the car. By the car door jam. And a smell I thought was burning brakes.

I have no clue what's wrong but I can't take a change on losing my car, even for one day. Any help from the Gods..(thats you guys) would be great.

A humble newbie

Check your transmission fluid and tell us what it looks like,
and what it smells like.

Wipe the stick on a white napking and tell us if you see any METAL SHAVINGS reflecting light.

Take the Contour to AUTOZONE and have them pull the trouble codes for you and post the codes here.

Ok, I just ran out side to check. After starting the car. The O/D light is not on, but the CEL was. The fuild is still pinkish with no metal shavings. smells ok, Not a burnt smell.
The codes will have to wait untill Monday. The car when and if it gets me home will sit for the weekend. Going out of town.

Also thank you for your time and help.

I'm back. I went to AutoZone and got it looked at. The code is P1405. I have tried doing a search on it. But no luck. They say it's a EGR sensor.(upstream hose off or plugged).
I don't know what a EGR is or looks like. And the guy was also no help on finding.

Any help on this half would be great.

Thanks a head of time.

P1405 Differential Pressure Feedback Electronic Sensor circuit Upstream Hose.

The DPFE is mounted down in the maze of hoses by the lower intake manifold. You should check for loose hoses but a cleaning of the UIM EGR passages may clear up the problem. There are several threads out there on this repair.
