Um, yank really hard?

I had the same problem... It's a total pain, but vigilance is key.

You can use some pliers on the boots if you're careful.

Beyond that, you'll have to remove the upper intake to gain better access.

Use pliers on the boot. Just do not pull on the wire itself. You can't damage the wire as long as you pull and clamp on the boot.

OK.. done...
I used nothing but my hands and and few layers of skin and well... was it worth it? Who knows, but the job is done and IMHO done well.

Thanks for the help Lance. I was ready to quit!

The second last time I pulled off the rear boots, I put rubber tips (surgical tubing)around the tips of the pliers, which in my case were long surgical clamps ( no longer being used in an operating room).Worked OK and the engine purred along but, after a few thousand km's the plug wires became bad, and were replaced..I must have damaged them slightly at removal and they must have degraded more over time .
If you experience sudden ignition problem in the not too distant future, it will most likely be the wires.
Take care.
