Is it possible for a drain plug to allow oil to seep out and hit the Y-pipe and cause a faint oil burning smell in the cabin especially when the climate control is on? If so, will a simple new plug eliminate the problem?

If the gasket is worn out, then yes. Ever replaced it?

Otherwise other likely culprits are oil pan and front seal...

If the drain plug on your vehicle is above the exhaust, it would most likely cause a burning smell, but on my Contour (V6) the drain plug isn't located that way. However, the drain plugs are fitted with a rubber gasket, so if you're able to get under the car you would see oil around the plug if it's leaking.

Have you noticed that the car is losing oil? If so, oil on any part of the engine block/heads would burn & cause a smell, not just on the exhaust. Check around the engine to see if there is any oil on it, which would probably indicate a leaking gasket.

Hope this helps!

Valve cover and oil pan gaskets are notorious leakers on the Duratecs. Don't ask how I know....

Did you do anything special to prevent future leaks when you replaced them? Believe it or not, I think oil pan and left valve cover are leaking on my 3.0 (3 months, 6000 miles after rebuild). mad I'll do the oil pan at my next oil change, and the valve cover the next time I feel like pulling intakes (excuse for 24# injectors?)

I have the exact same problem on my 2.5L. Looked at the pan - there is oil definitely coming from the plug and maybe the pan gasket. The pan gasket appears to be silicone (red). The front seal is dry.
Apparently oil is getting on the exhaust pipe and burning.
The problem just occured the last oil change (@ 80K) when I switched brands of oil - Havoline synthetic (used since new) to Mobil 1.
I wonder if this could be the problem; different seal swell rates between the two.

While under the car tonight. I cleaned the entire underside of the engine with Coastal Power Cleaner and Brake Parts cleaner. It still smells like oil, but I'm going to give it a little while before I check it out underneath again. Hopefully the clean bottom end will allow me to pinpoint the leak. But you said it could also be the valve cover, how can I check that? Yes, I am losing a bit of oil, but not at an alarming rate. Maybe it's time to 3L and address all these issues when the engine is out.

Check your oil filter for leaking at the gasket.
