Hi all. I,m new to this board, but figured since I own a Contour(95) I should probably register. My problem is tire noise. Extreme tire noise. The noise is constant, athough when I turn in one direction, 5-10 degrees, the noise gets louder. The other direction makes the noise mute. It has been doing this for around 6 months, and until I had a four wheel alignment done, It didnt get any worse.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Btw, Anyone know what the max rpm on the 2.0L is.

What kind of noise (describe)? What is the condition of the tires? Are they balanced properly?

The noise you describe seems to indicate a worn wheel bearing--another way to test this would be to grab the tyre at 3 and 9 o'clock and rock the wheel back and forth a couple of times. With a worn bearing, there will be a noticeable amount of play present.

Do the brakes feel weird? Sometimes if its a wheel bearing to far gone the brakes can feel really weird.

If it truly is tire noise, the noise won't go away until the tires are replaced. An alignment will usually keep the wear pattern from getting worse, but it will not correct the wear pattern that has already developed.

Check your tires for cupping. Cupped tires make nearly the same sound as a bad wheel bearing. Often a cupped tire can be better found by feel rather than by sight.

The brakes feel normal, although the noise has persisted for 6 months now. I do have snow tires on the front, but I would not think that the noise would be that great. I actually have screws rattling loose from the vibration. The weird thing is that after the alignment, the noise actually increased!

Welcome to wheel bearing H3LL! I am your host FORD. One of the biggest problems are in fact the wheel bearings.

If the problem were indeed wheel bearings, wouldnt they have gotten worse over the last 6 months? It sounds like bearing fatigue is a common ailment for the contour/mistique.

Sounds like a wheel bearing, but it could still be the tire(s).
I had a constant tire noise for at least 6 mos. Turned out to be a cupped tire - a steady bup-bup-bup-bup...., etc., sound.
Sears gave me the run around, but there was a noticeable scalloping/cupping wear pattern on the tire that also could be felt with the hand. A newborn could have detected that!
The bad tire was eventually replaced, totally eliminating the sound problem. I don't understand why Sears blew-off my problem several times, especially in light of the recent Firestone litigation.
