When I remove the oil filter, the oil splashes all over that end of the engine. No metter how well I wipe it up, I'm prob going to smell hot oil for weeks, while stopped at a light, for instance. Anyone have a good technique for removing that filter? I've tried about 5 ways.

Before you remove the filter, 'spike' a hole in it at its lowest point and let it drain first.....

For removing the filter? nope, just the best way you have found, is probably as good as it will get. Find yourself some cheap Brake Part Cleaner, and spray the area around the filter AFTER YOU HAVE THE NEW FILTER INSTALLED (Dont want brake cleaner getting into the oil filter hole!) The oil will come right off the motor without even having to touch it with a rag! -Nick

Let the oil drain for 10 min. before doing the filter. Wrap old newpaper around the exhaust manifold and try to keep the filter tipped up as you pull it to minimize spilling on the block/exhuast/hands/eyeballs. Toss out the newspaper and wipe up where you can.

Tried the spike. Still got a flood when removing the can. Tried holding vertical, ragging, masking and wiping. Want to try the brake cleaner trick, if I don't find anything better. I may also try the spike, then crack the can off just a little, to minimize the flood. Thanks for tips so far. More?

Along with putting a hole in the end of the filter, I use some .015" aluminum flashing cut to roughly 7"X 8" and put it up tight against the block and behind the lip of the oil filter. Bend the flashing slightly to keep the oil running down the center of the flashing into the drain pan as you start to unscrew the filter. This does work but I usually still spill some oil on the exhaust. It eliminates alot of the mess, but I still end up using brake cleaner also. Ed

The OF suggested covering the y-pipe in aluminum foil. I do that and finish off spots with brake cleaner.

I very, very slowly "crack" the filter and let it trickle down the outside of the filter till it stops before removing the filter completely. Also, I bring the car to a car wash with an under car wash program. No problems.
