What is the proper lug nut torque? I did 50 ft-lb and almost lost my right front wheel when it started coming loose. Made a real nice grinding sound to let me know "hey I'm a gonna split!"

as low as 65 for early 'tors. it gets higher to iirc 80 for later years.

imho, if you tighten them evenly you can go to 80 any year... I keep it at 67 and had no warpage and no loose wheels so far

i posted this question a couple of months back when i painted my calipers and had to put my rims back on. good luck. all i know is that i got a whole range of answers. i know the manual says 40 lbs but some people were saying that there was an "ammendment" to it and it brought the lbs up higher. i'm also pretty sure that when i asked a "certified svt dealer" what they put my rims back on the car at the answer was 40 lbs. (that's also the same dealer that scraped my front bumper b/c they don't know how to pull onto their lifts corretly.

Many post on this and the consensus was around 65 ft/lbs as a good place to start... up to 80 is where some souls like it. The BIGGEST thing is EVEN all around. And if you have alloy wheels, torque em down and then loosen em one bolt at a time and retorque (with the wheel off the ground). Then they are REALLY evenly torqued. And then you don't have to go back a week later and retorque 'em like the manual sez. Mah paranoid gland sez the rotors warp really only from mistorqued wheel nuts. An I have NEVER gotten mah ride back from the dealer with correctly/EVENLY torqued wheels when they took a wheel off to work on it.

Whatever you do, HAND TORQUE THEM! Don't let any shop use air tools.

I have steel wheels but I torque mine to 100ft.lbs.

IIRC the current Ford spec for all Contiques clear back to 95 is 85 to 100 ft/lb. They felt that 65 was not enough. I have mine at 95.

I have mine at 90. FWIW, air tools are ok so long as torque sticks are used. Those are accurate to within 2-4 ft-lbs.
