I have a 98, and was thinking about trying to mount a head unit in the center console. Using a tape measure, it appeared that it would fit length-wise and width-wise, albeit with some serious dremmeling. I wasn't sure about the depth, though.

Has anyone tried this? Any pros or cons that come to mind?

I'm not so sure you could make it fit width wise, although if you go with a headunit that is sized for japanese cars you can probably make it fit. The biggest issue that comes to my mind is ergonomics. It will be a real pain in the ass to control it from there. Also, if this is for security reasons, the center console is where most thieves look right away because so many people take their face plates off and just stick them there.

i'm thinkin' why bother, unless your thinkin of a DVD screen in the factory din. But even then you can get a DVD player/screen combo that'll fit in the single DIN opening. Just sounds like a lot of wasten energy, plus you'll have to reinforce the center console so that the HU doesn't collapse the plastic fom vibrations.

also, make sure your HU will be able to play CD (or whatever media) when installed vertically. CD changers are usually OK with vertical mounting, but HUs are optimized the other way to prevent skipping, etc...

A great option would be to find a pre 98 center console and swap it with the one you have now....

Here's my Pre98 console in my 99 Tour. There is an extra 1 din space for whatever else you would like to add.......
