Depends on what type of tire you have. Directional tires stay on the same side of the car and just rotate front to back and back to front. Non-directional tires should be rotated fronts to rear without changing sides and rears to fronts in opposite directions. Left rear to right front, right rear to left front. You can do it other ways, but I believe this is standard.

How can you tell if your tires are directional or not?

if you have the KDWs they're directional. directional tires have tread that usually "points" towards the front, and hence that is their direction of rotation. they usually have an arrow on the sidewall, too, poining in which direction the tire should turn. so, if you have directional tires, it's just front to back. Isn't there a way to X rotate directional tires because you can flip the tire over and the tread will still face the same direction...

The only way to X rotate directional tires is to have them remounted on the rims on the other side. X rotating is not necessary for most drivers these days. Front to back, back to front is all that is most tire shops do every 6k miles.

Usually the only reason to dismount tires for rotation is if you own a Corvette or Viper or something of the like, where the front and rear tires are different sizes. Of course, you can't do this if the tires are both directional AND asymetric (meaning they have a rotation direction and are left/right specific).
For those of us using directional tires, front to back and back to front is just fine.
