My shield has been off for about a year now while I was searching for some oil leaks. Since the leaks are mostly fixed I have reinstalled it. I wish I had a oil temperature gauge, to compare readings with and without it on. The shield blocks air that would get to the oil pan without it on.
It definitely complicates getting at the oil filter. Ed

Very true on both accounts.

jb, you've probably been told this already however your problem is the result of the unprotected serpentine belt getting splashed by H2O coming off the wheel. This was a common ailment of the "95 Contiques and early 96s. Fixing it is fairly straight foward, get a new belt, pick up a splash shield from Ford $38-43.00, the net $27-30.00, junkyard $10.00. They also suggest replacing belt tensioner, I think. This whole issue is well described in the FAQ section. That is a hell of surprise though, particularly tooling along at 65 when the storm hits.

good luck

My splash guard fell off my 95 Mystique within the first year, and I never replaced it. The return hose from the P/S pump was left exposed about 1/2 inch below the bumber. I never had a problem with this. I have always been very careful when I parked my car, not to park too close a curb or one of those concrete parking lot stops. Last week my wife damaged the hose and lost the fluid when parking. I just spent $178 at a Ford dealer to replace the hose (what a rip off). I also had them tie the hose up above the bottom of the bumper.
