I need to know how to remove my shift knob so that I can paint the trim around it.
Thanks

That's something I want to know, too. IIRC, I think there's an allen screw on the driver's side and it pulls off. I'm not sure though, and I haven't gotten my car yet, so I can't go check it.

Hacksaw? J/K

ATX or MTX?

Actually, some have shortened their MTX shifter this way.

Remove the screw, yank up, cut the O/D wires (you can put these back together) and it's off.

Just be careful when you remove the screw. I had problems when we pulled the center console up, apparently the guy at Ford who put the shift on originally had screw so tight, that it popped out and I had to replace the whole shifter.

What year / model do you have? These guys are assuming it's an ATX..

On '98 and up MTX cars simply "unscrew" the shift knob until the whole thing comes off. At that point if you pull up on the leather boot it'll unclip and you can take it away to paint the plastic trim.

Does that help?

If it's an ATX then thats how you do it, but make sure you leave enough wire for the over drive from the shifter itself. If not it's not fun trying to get the wires back together.
What color are you painting it.
Have you considered something like this?

I broke my shifter, so I need to get a new one. $204 for a leather one, $294 for a wood one. I'm thinking I'll get the one for the new Taurus Limiteds, wooden shifter, chrome button. Good thing most Ford sedans use the same shifter (has anyone else noticed how Mustang, Contour, Mystique, Taurus, Sable, Crown Vic, Marquis, Focus, etc...all use the same ATX shifter knobs? BTW, what's with that stupid thing on top of ours???)
