This problem just surfaced this week--for no apparent reason, the power door locks on my 95 Contour GL Duratec stopped working. I replaced the fuse, but that had no effect. Anyone got any ideas?? Thanx! [LIST]95 Contour GL, V6 Duratec, 131000 Kms

Mine wazzed out once and refused to operate untill I reset the computer. I was working on the car with some tools that sparked/arced and I think that scrambled its little brain.

Thanks for replying, 2X95SEs..... I tried resetting the computer (by disconnecting the battery) without success. I was tinkering around with it earlier today & found a brown relay behind the glovebox with the words "power door lock relay" stamped on the side. I couldn't hear it clicking when I pressed the power door switch, so I'm kinda thinking that this may be the cause of the problem....... I'll be looking to get a new one next week sometime. The only thing that leaves me a little apprehensive is that I substituted the heated rear window relay to try & test it, & that didn't work either--but that relay is a different colour (yellow) & slightly smaller. However, the door lock relay didn't work in the window's slot, either making me think that the 2 relays simply aren't interchangeable. Unfortunately, no other relays will even fit in the slot, so I'll have to take the plunge & try a new one.... fingers crossed!

My guess would be that you hit the nail right on the head, and I would also say it was the relay. And I don't think that the relay for the heated window worked cuz it's a different relay. It's either a SPST / DPST (single pole single throw / double pole single throw etc.) where as the the window relay is prob. a 4PDT because it is controlling four circuits (window switches) Hope that made sense. Anyways, try a new relay and let us know if that fixed the problem.

Well, I tried the new relay & it didn't work.......... A bit disappointing since it cost CDN$70! I suppose that means the problem must be something to do with a faulty connection or earth somewhere, but I'm not about to rip my trim apart looking for it. It's a bit annoying, but I'll just have to live without it for the time being, until I've got some spare cash & can get it looked at. Oh, well............

If its been sub zero or frost you may have water in the power lock mech, common problem, the lock does a 'double' action when it tries to open but fails.Inner door panel off,dry out the water, loads of Si grease on the mech...done!

Thanks to everyone for their input!
I'm familiar with the problem you mentioned, Terry-- it happened to me on a Ford Sierra I owned when posted to Germany with the Air Force....... we had some pretty cold winters there, too! When I would try & open the door, the locks would operate several times without actually unlocking. With my Contour, however, there is just no power/movement whatsoever.

Check the plug in the door shut/hinge area, the 'twist-loc',can get bad contacts on the pins.
