My 1995 Contour automatic transmission is shifting really hard ,when you give it the gas it actually chirps the tires between first and second ,I should mention that it is a duratec engine. I have checked the fluid level and it is good. The transmission also seems to be staying in third and not going into overdrive even when I switch the consul button.Anyone have any ideas?.

Does not sound normal. The automatic transmission on these cars actually shift pretty smooth. I think they are produced by Mazda. I recommend having a good transmission shop test drive it. It may be something as simple as a bad modulator or a vacuum leak. Or.....

Dunno if this will help, but mine did this after an engine cleaning a while back. I reset the computer (Removed Neg. battery cable for 2 min.), left the hood open for a few hours and the problem cleared up. If your tranny fluid is not clear with red tint, a change is probably in order and may help. Lots of posts on this subject lately in the tranny forum. As a last resort, you might try Lucas oil stabilizer, but if you need this, you probably have bigger problems brewing.
