Latley I can hear a grinding noise when shifting from near a dead stop to first gear, sometimes second too. It's not the actual shifting that makes the grinding noise, but accelerating in low speeds in 1st gear. It sounds exactally like an 18 wheeler in low gear only not as loud. It seems to only make this noise when the car has been run for a while. Transmission fluid is at normal level and I'm running the Mobil 1 ATF cocktail w 2oz Ford Friction Modifer. Brake fluid levels are normal too. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Any suggestions? Thanks!

To add, when accelerating in reverse it sounds just like a bad lifter tap. I know it's not suppose to sound like that... mad

yeah I used to have the same sound from my 95 F-150, it had a 5 spd and a 4.9L6. Except it made the noise in every gear, it sounded like rocks in a blender.

I was told that it is the sound of the internal parts of the transmission vibrating or some other way making noise from the vibration created by the engine running at a low RPM, and is not casue for alarm.
