Ok here is my problem

I got a 96 Ford Contour GL with the Z 4L 2.0L Engine, with manual transmission.

In the morning when it's basically cool, whenever i tried to start driving, the car suddenly surges (best described as not getting the gas it needs) and sometimes dies. After a second of holding down the gas, eventually the engine will start to accelerate, and doesn't act up again for the remaining gears. Then, i come to a stop, try to start on first gear again, and it does the same thing. It doesn't do it as much when the engine is warm, but still does it. It's real annoying, cause i don't want to try to turn into traffic and find myself stuck in front of a semi. Anybody have any ideas on what is wrong with my car? Thanks in advance!

Whens the last time you changed your fuel filter? That might be starving the engine for fuel.

Keith,

I found this article today. It applies to the 2.5, but it is at least something to go on.

Warm-up problems

Look for the article titled "Engine Warm-up Promotes Performance Problems".
