1996 SE and 1996 GL with a chirping sound comming from fan blower under the dash. Only when on its lowest speed. Sounds like crickets!

Seems to be a ford thing! Had the same thing on my Escort.

It is starting to drive me nuts! Is it the bearing or something?

How hard is it to get at the blower? I had a look under the dash with the glovebox removed and it looks like quite the job.

Any advice?

In Ford's defense, my GM '90 Buick also has this problem, but its blower motor is PITA to remove(ps pump interferes with extraction).

Contour - From under dash behind glovebox, disconnect wiring to resistors, lift retaining lug and rotate motor 30 degrees counter-clockwise to remove. (from service manual, haven't done myself.)

Have the same problem with my '95 GL, my solution: Tune into local hard rock station (in my case, Q107 in Toronto), crank 'er and pray that they play Led Zeppelin Immigrant song or something similar!

Totally stock Fix Or Repair Daily '95 GL Extent of mods: Pioneer 6x8's up front to replace crap stock speakers and a host of oil stains in the trunk....oh yeah, and a trailer hitch too!

I plan to go after the problem and will post a solution.
If there is any more advice on removing the blower then please let me know.

I had the same problem with a warranty fix. I didn't think that they would find it, because it happens imtermittently. I must be lucky with my ford dealership in Houston. Anyway, enough on that.

Getting the blower motor out is VERY easy. It takes about 5 minutes.

I can't remember if I had to remove a trim panel from underside of the passenger-side dash. anyway, the motor has two latches to disengage, then rotate it counterclockwise about 1/4 turn. It will then slide straight down. Very simple to get at.

Good Luck,
David
