I noticed a "thrum" noise from 30-50 coming from the rear - possible wheel bearing. 98 SVT with 28k. Took it to the dealer for the heater resistor recall, paid them $25 to diagnose & advise. $250 total est, $120 for the part!! I called NAPA and got the part for $38. The manual & posts I've read make it sound like a fairly easy job. Any input?

I don't think that NAPA sold you the right part.
Plus I think we have hub bearing in the rear, nut just replaceable bearings.
I could also be wrong.

If we have replaceable bearings, you have to be VERY careful when it comes to knocking out the old bearing races, and installing the new bearing races.

$38 would be a steal for a hub & bearing assy. Especially at NAPA.
NAPA is about the only parts house that rivals the dealer in markup. I suggest picking another parts source...

My NAPA price for hub / bearing $38.12 each (guess I get a good discount!). SKF is the manufacturer.

What size is the nut that holds the hub on? One post said 32mm. - approx 1 1/4".

Would someone please verify the nut size so I have the correct socket to install tonight?

THX!

This might sound like a too obvious answer, but after changing both rear wheel bearings and having a four-wheel alignment, I still had the same thrumming noise between 30-50 mph. The tires were fairly new so I didn't suspect them, but lo and behold, when I put new Michelins on the car, the noise went away and hasn't been back since... go figure...
