I just put on new tires yesterday and the dealership said my bearings need replaced(passenger front wheel) My 98.5 SVT only has 56K on it which seems a little soon for new bearings dont it? Anyways to make this short the Ford Dealership quoted my $290.00 !!!! A little pricey for me. Has anyone ever done this them self? If so how hard is it?

Do a search,I've posted many times about this one.Unless you have a press, correct pullers etc 'dont go there'! Its a PITA,a lot of members have ended up damaging the new bearing.I'd suggest a good local shop that knows Contours Vs Pep Boys etc,who have also caused some probs.

I still don't totally understand what you mean, Terry. Do you mean just don't press the bearing in yourself, or do you mean don't even try to take the knuckle out? I know for a fact that if you take the knuckle out, many shops only charge about $10 - 20 to press the bearing in using the shop press.

I was under the impression that the bearings were in the hub itself. So I would just have to buy a whole new hub and won't have to mess with the bearings themselves am I wrong?

Knuckle has to come out, need correct puller to'push back'cv shaft, need a shop press and a shop that knows how to refit the drive flange into the bearing before the assy is put back on the cv shaft, allways change the two retaining clips with the new bearing assy...

You'll soon notice after a good SEARCH, that this is a common problem with these cars. Enjoy that engine and bells and whisles because those bearings are going to keep going and going and going.

Funny coincidence, I was just doing that this morning, right after I ate a big-a** bowl of Wheaties...
