Funny this topic comes up just as exactly the same thing starts happening with my car (99 SVT, approx 20K miles) and I come looking for answers. smile

I'm quite certain this is not the classic 'throttle hang.'

This 'hanging rpms' started quite suddenly yesterday. If I'm cruising along a parkway in 4th around 3,000 rpms, I can take my foot off the accelerator, and it's like it's on cruise control...the rpms will stay there forever.

At a stop, it takes forever for the rpms to drop back to idle, if they ever make it that far before the light changes.

A couple of times, I've pushed the clutch in and watched the revs actually go up a few hundred.

I'll suggest the dealer start with the TPS.

The TPS is about $25 and 5 minutes to replace, or "much cheaper to replace than to diagnose".

Bill Jenkins at Sentry South LM can probably get it cheaper...$25 was from my local Ford dealer.

I would really try cleaning the throttle body first before changing sensors. It probably needs it anyways. My car has almost 70000 miles on it now and I know that The throttle body needed to be cleaned around 30000 miles because the throttle was sticking.

I had the same exact problem and the dealer found out my MAF went bad. Once replaced, all was better! smile Good luck explaining it to the dealer, if you're under warantee. They had my car for 2 days trying to fix my problem. I know it wasn't TH, because when I pushed the clutch, the revs rose. I would be sitting at lights at 4k rpm.

I have had all of these problems, RPM sticking and RPM rise. When I took it to the dealer they found that the IAC valve solenoid was bad. They replaced it and the car drove like a dream for less then 2 months, and now the symptoms are coming back.

I don't know what to do because the car runs ok in the cold, but when the weather gets warmer, that's when it starts acting up again. With winter coming I don't know if its worth taking it to the dealer.

My sticking/rising RPM problem lasted for two days.

Everything returned to normal at the usual time....on my way to the dealer to have it checked.

The suggestion from there: If and when it happens again, and you're in the neighbourhood, stop in and see us, and leave the car running.

I guess it's the best they can do for now.

A competent mechanic with the right equipment should be able to check all of the items mentioned. Find a shop with a scope. Engine codes can only go so far in diagnosing problems.

My '98 E1 SVT does the throttle boogie, and it has since day one. Sometimes it will hang around 35000. Other times it will hang and sloooooowly drop to idle. At times it even climbs from 3500 to 5000rpms. Gulp! My car has been check and checked again. Funny thing is, it never happens at the dealer. It comes and goes, so I don't sweat it much. I've learned to live with it. Now....if someone steals my car......he he he! Watch out!
