Speaking of Blackstone Labs... 'You have added 900 miles to your oil use since last sample, and wear from your 98 Contour engine actually improved quite a lot. Since we didn't find any problems in the oil of the last sample, we have no idea as to the reason for the improvement. Perhaps the oil cooler is a factor. Silcon improved, so possibly the air your engine is breathing is cleaner. both air and oil filtration were functioning normally while this oil was in use. This was 5W/30 engine oil with no gas, moisture or anti-freeze in it. Nice 2.5L!' As Jay said, this is where it counts the most! This was a sample with 3900 miles on it. Next sample I will send will have 4500 miles on it. So there, clean inside, slighty dirty outside.

The only thing Blackstone bagged on for me was Si content. They say check my air filtration, but I think I know what the real culprit is: my disintegrating left precat. Not excessive, 31 ppm. If I could just get a yard to actually tell me that they warrant the d**n precats, even for just 30 days, I could buy one. I'm getting the following response, from more than one yard: "We sell the cat converter at extra cost, not included with the manifold."

If I had to remove the firewall side manifold, then I would be all about gutted. I'd buy a set from Brad Noon. However, I am "lucky" enough to only have to replace the radiator side manifold, and you couldn't make me gut them on the motor. Having only one gutted manifold sounds like bad mojo to me, so I'm taking the path of least resistance (and cost) for now. Ford wants $500 for one manifold! Don't worry - headers (or gutted cats) are in the long term plan, but I just can't justify them right now. I'll be hanging on to the bad manifold for just that. Now if I could just find a yard that doesn't have "head in butt" disease ...

How often do you send your oil in? It's 18.50 a pop

I just did it for the first time, and now that summer is over I shouldn't be putting 5000 miles (my change interval) on every 2 months. $18.50 is a small price IMHO to have the ability to identify potential problems before they become serious. I see it as periodic "blood tests" on my engine. Don't want that cholesterol to get too high ...

I send it on both cars, every oil change. I consider it as preventative maintainence.
