my 2000 Contour SE V-6/auto used to make a noise that was kind of weird. it only did it when it was cold, and for the longest time, i thought for sure it was the alternator or something in the transmission.
i have been reading this forum alot the last two days, and when i read the stuff about "moosing" i was excited, that maybe there was an answer, or at least other people experiencing it. this was because "moose" really is a pretty good description of how it sounded.
the more i have read though, the more i think i have a different problem. with MY car, the sound changed when i turned the steering wheel. that was a revelation to me.
it wasnt until a few days after THAT, that i noticed that it sounds just like the hydraulic pumps (HUGE pumps, driven by 100 and 150hp electric motors) at the factory i worked at. the hydraulics at the factory go under huge stress every hour of every day, and the sound changes depending on how much stress was 'happening.' so, to sum it up, i realized that the sounds were the same, except on a different 'scale.'
anyone else have a similar occurence?

Yes, there have been exact same reports. Here... But, I could also be your power steering pump. Do a search on "moose" in the problem forum. You'll be amazed how many times this has been covered.

Your problem might be that when you turn the wheel, the RPM's go up, which would change the sound of your new friend (the moose) try the moose fix and see if it still does this. Good Luck..... -Nick

I'm convinced that I have this cold weather pet. Really dislikes it when it's cold and I turn on the defroster. But when the engine gets good and warm, he stops complaining. The last complaining he does is when I turn, especially a left turn, and then at one particular spot in the turn. Then after continued driving, he goes completely to sleep, and I don't hear from him until the next cold morning. I have a 99 Mystique, 6 cyl., auto trans with about 22000 miles on it. I'm waiting until it gets good and cold before I take it into the dealer, because the car has to be tested on a cold morning from a dead start. Otherwise he will hide, and the tech will tell me he's not there, and I'm hearing things.

Power Assisted Steering I believe.
If it's true that we are here to help others, then what exactly are the others here for?
