I'm getting a noise. The sound is like an electric motor under a load. It corresponds to engine speed. Cannot hear it while driving even with stereo off. But at stop quite noticeable. A rrrrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrr whining sound. My guess is the alternator. But is it just getting wierd or is it getting ready to DIE!!!! With the lights off the noise is almost imperceptible. Just curious. ????

Do you have an aftermarket stereo?? amps etc.. Try checking your grounds or your gains on your amp (if they are turned up to high you get wine) and a bad ground will also cause this. just my two cents smile

As Terry H. mentioned, possible worn alternator brushes. Another possibility is scored commutator or worn bearing that allows rotating element to contact the field coils & generate the whining sound. Replace alternator.. OR...

could it be a low fluid level in the power steering pump reservoir?...just my $00.02. laugh

Is the smoke alarm in your house also known as the "dinner bell"?
