I have always been pretty unhappy with the low end of my doors speakers. I have tried a couple of didferent speakers, JBL, and BA's but no help on the low end. I guess that is just the way it goes.
Anyway last weekend i built door pods out of 1/2 inch mdf and it made a difference. basically i copied the plate i made for the 6.5's to fit in the stock hole 2 times and then made and eclosed and sealed it. The windows just clear the pods.
What i noticed right away is that the speakers became tighter and the sound seemed more vibrant. The low end didnt get much better but the speaker sounds much better over all than before.
This is an alternative to those who want to build kick panels. this way it can be as sloppy as you want and you still achieve the same idea but it is just loctaed in the stock locations. I am into great sound in my car but not into spending ten grand to get it. Just incase anyonce has toyed with this idea it can be done.

The only difference between that and actual kickpanels is the disatnce from your ear to each speaker is increased with kickpanels, which is why they are seen in high end systems. The idea is to get the speakers as far away as possible so the sounds from each side reach your ears at the same time. Many HUs now offer adjustments to tailor the music to a certain seating position but generally this messes the sound up for the passenger (I know, it isn't his car, but half the fun in this is props for your hard work when you crank the volume).

Another difference is that when you have it in kickpanels, you lose some low end response. It's due to the fact that it's not in any type of enclosure, such as the door. As with my speakers, i got 8" coaxials, but they lack badly in midbass. Thats why i'll be putting some in my door, along with another pair of tweeters on the dash.

I won't have that problem though since the Neo8s don't need an enclosure... unfortunately they also have NO low end response in the first place

I used 1/2" mdf also but went with 5 1/4 focal utopia's. I was able to put the speaker and the tweeter together. The sound is crystal clear. Wish I could have gotten some kick panels to make the sound trave a little though. Still very happy with it. No one can believe thier ears as it is!!

Sound damping the front doors will help tighten the front midbass as well w/o having to build an enclosure.

Many car midranges/midbasses are designed to play in an infinite baffle/free air setup, like a car door.
