hi guys,

after a long trip, ~200 miles on a highway or in city traffic on a hot day, my automatic transmission seems to shift very hard into gear... and sometimes when i romp on it, the tires squeal because it shifted so hard. However, during normal driving to work and back and to anywhere else the tranny is fine.

i was wondering if if the oil in the transmission is not flowing properly to the radiator, or the filter is clogged on the transmission causing a slow flow of fluid, thus overheating my transmission.

Can overheated transmission fluid break down and be useless after certain temperatures?

I have changed the fluid about 15 times and i still have this problem.

Thanks a lot for suggestions

Sound like your transmission needs a FLUSH.
Your DEALER is the only one with the equipment to do this correctly.
If you don't get it done soon, and get your problem diagnosed, you may need to replace the tranny.
I had to replace mine at 35,000 miles with the same problem.

The problem ended up being the Torque Converter Clutch overheated the transmission
after driving more than 150 miles on the highway.
I installed a AutoMeter ATX Fluid Temp gauge just to show my dealer that the ATX was overheating,
and overheating my engine because the heat was being transferred through the radiator.

My second ATX started acting up when it got 30,000 miles on it.
My dealer flushed it TWICE, before the problems went away.
Now FORD has a new IN-LINE filter for the ATX that goes between the cooler return line and the ATX.
It was mentioned on this forum, and on the NECO or Probe board.
I don't remenber which one.

There is a TSB out for the filter and FORD requires that it be installed with every ATX repair or exchange.
The filter is good for 30,000 miles.

The reason they have this filter is because the CD4E only has a SCREEN that is removed and cleaned when the transmission is OVERHAULED.
We don't have a bottm pan, so our ATX cannot be service like everyone else's ATX.

I hope this info helps...

Does this go for a 1998 GL contour? Or is it just the older 1995 style contours? Just wondering because my tranny also seems to shift quite hard.

The part number for the kit is XC3Z-7B155-AA.
Just the filter for replacement is part number XC3Z-7B155-BA

This sounds like a good idea to put it on your car weather it is having problems or not. it is a lot cheaper than a new transmission, i plan on putting this on my car soon, as well as a real OTA transmission cooler. HEAT is the #1 enemy of automatic transmissions, the cooler you keep it, the longer it will last, and the better it will run.
