I have a 96 GL, and my O/D Off light keeps flashing. The tranny changes gear hard. 1st and 2nd only. But when I RTFM it does not say anything. I have checked my fluid level and everything seems fine. Also when the light is not flashing my tranny works fine. HELP.......

Also Thank You in Advance.

Some of the guys over on Fordmondeo.org are experiencing problems with there ATX also, I've been lucky so far and mine had been hassle free.

Anyway suggestions to resolve your problem are, Change the fluid ( completely ) in the ATx making sure you refill with Ford RECOMMENDED fluid only. Secondly the MLPS could have given up ( MLPS = Manual Lever Position Sensor ) Or perhaps the Micro switch under the O/D button ?

Perhaps contacting Mike_J_C over on Fordmondeo.org would be a good start as heres dealing with a local dealer and Auto Trans specialist.

Hope this helps

Not familiar with acronym: RTFM.

Previous posts on O/D light flashing have been inconclusive. Fluid level and temperature have been mentioned. I've experienced this symptom a couple of times on my '97, but it simply went away. Haven't had for more than a year. I did not experience any atx problems when light came on.

You might want to check connections at Transmission Range Sensor, located under thermostat as a possibility.

The F = Ford manual doesn't help either.

I had the same symptoms on my 96 2.5. It was a busted vehicle speed sensor.

The three previous transmission in the Zetec all did this right before they died.

Yes you read right, THREE!

It happens in my 97 contour also once in a while. The o/d light will come on flashing and it will shift harder.

If you turn the car on and off it will go away. It has been going on for a while now.

It seems to happen when the car has been running for a while so I suspect something is overheating.

Any ideas??

I had to chase that problem for months and I finally got it fixed. My mechanic told me that in my case when the o/d light blimks and was shifting hard, it was in "safe mode" which it will resort to when there is a problem. We changed the mlps sensor and the speed sensor and still had the problem. It wasn´t until I changed the plug wires that it went away. I never would have suspected that, but he told me to do it and viola! Ran perfect. Someone once told me that electromagnetic fields from plug wires could interfere with a sensor for the atx. Good luck, John
