Are they the same motor? If they are, as a simple mod, as the V8 folks do, Could a crank shaft and maybe if needed rods from a 3L be installed in a SVT 2.5? If so, that would seem to be a cheaper easier mod than an entire engine change.

Never mind about the crank. It occured to after I posted this that an upstroke maybe included in the 4 stroke process and there may also be something above the cylinder bore.

The cranks/rods are the same size. The extra .5 of a liter comes from a bigger bore on the 3 liter, so a crank and/or rod swap would still leave you with a 2.5L engine. wink

BTW, engine specs should be searchable in this section of the forums if you'd like to know more.

The cranks come from the same forging but more mass is removed for a 2.5L crank during balancing due to the smaller (i.e. lighter) 2.5L piston & rod assembly. I suppose a crank shop could add weight to return the 2.5L crank to the 3.0L specification. Adding weight is always a risky thing to do though. If it ever comes loose, there will be hell to pay.

Good tidbit Procyon. Did the weight loss in the 2.5L cost strength or is it more from the loss of counterweight size.
also, I have read that they share rods ..true?

There is extra drilling done on the 2.5L crank counterweights during balancing. Nothing major. No effect on strength or durability.

Well given that the stock damper is very suboptimal and lots of bending/"whip" is occuring to fatigue the metal it is not surprising that it would seem so. But how weak is it really? It is a forged from billet steel.. I would think with a DMD it should hold up well. I have not heard of crank failures just spun bearings?? Several of the S/C cars are making near 350 HP for 10,000 miles, Dutweiller's turbo was 450 HP, in the article he said it looked like a pretty stout piece..?? confused

Compared to what?

Personally a stock (Factory) V6 crank holding 450HP or spinning 8000+ rpm sounds fairly strong IMO.

So is the DMD the only part to help eliminate a weak crank? What else could be done to beef up this part?
