Hi,
Is the Mazda Milennia S 2.3L Supercharged engine any relative of the Duratec?

I stole this from howstuffworks.com: A Miller-cycle engine is very similar to an Otto-cycle engine. The Miller-cycle uses pistons, valves, a spark plug, etc., just like an Otto-cycle engine does. There are two big differences: -A Miller-cycle engine depends on a supercharger. -A Miller-cycle engine leaves the intake valve open during part of the compression stroke, so that the engine is compressing against the pressure of the supercharger rather than the pressure of the cylinder walls. The effect is increased efficiency, at a level of about 15 percent. There was a link at the HSW site to a Mazda site which details the benefits of a miller cycle engine.

I am presently driving a 2000 Millenia S our third (my wife loves and leases them), and the engine is great 210 H.P. low end Torque is lacking a little as you can imagine 2.3,but it rev's and it also gets great gas mileage. All I do is change the Mobil 1 every 3-5,000 miles and they all have been problem free (I guess that can't be said about Duratec's unfortunatly) By the way the top speed is about 140!

Hi SuperTouring Mike,
I see from your signature you own a Zetec Tour, have you seen the Duratec V6 and if so does the "Miller Motor" resemble it at all?
Thanks, ...Ed

Edorfox, I have seen the Duratec and do not believe they are related. The 2.3 Mazda is most likely an version of the MX-3 1.8 or a new engine altogether. It is as you know a DOHC 4-Valve all aluminum engine with "Miller Cycle" which uses a Lysholm supercharger (screw type, low pressure)and two intercoolers.

The Mazda 2.5 V6 is not related to the Duratech. Also, this engine is being phased out in favor of a new improved Duratech in the 2003 Mazda 6.

I take exception to that statement. I have a 98 CSVT with 106,xxx miles on it that is in perfect running condition. Always has been too. Regular maintenance and oil changes... I don't think I'm the only one with a problem free Duratec motor either.
