To make a long story short - I bought a new pair of tires from a Just Tires shop a few weeks ago. Shortly after that I get a weird vibration in the right front wheel, it turns out that I have a broken wheel stud and one of the lug nuts just fell to the ground when I took off my center caps to investigate the vibration. I was basically driving around with only two lug nuts secure.
I figured that the Just Tires shop hadn't tightened the lug nuts properly (the manager agreed), and I had them replace the broken stud for free. This was last week.
Yesterday (having learned the lesson to check the car after any service was done) I removed the center cap again, and ANOTHER LUG NUT DROPS TO THE GROUND. It wasn't the new one, but it may be the other one that originally fell off. I stood right next to the Just Tires guy while he worked on my car and I'm pretty sure all the lug nuts were tight (3 of them were still tight yesterday). I put it back on and made sure it was tight, I'll check it again tomorrow or later today.
Anybody have any idea why a lug nut would loosen and just fall off like that?

I knew I'd get a laugh or two, but I couldn't resist naming this topic that. It's so fitting. By the way Andy, I don't think it's foul play since my alarm is hyper sensitive and I'm sure it would have gone off. But, then again, you never know these days.

I had two wheel studs break off about 3 months ago. The breaks were rainbow-colored like they were exposed to extreme heat and broke along a fracture. Either that or they were sub-standard right from the factory. The wheel shop tech that replaced the studs also said that the remaining lugnuts were showing signs of movement (slight, but hey, any movement is bad).
I never got a good answer from the other owners here or from any wheel guys I've talked to. I adjusted the torque from 95 ft-lbs to 75, but I doubt that had anything to do with it. Past archives point to hub-centric vs. wheel-centric wheels. Try a search if you have some time to read. Personally, I wish that we had a 5-stud conversion kit like the Mustangs, or better yet, 6-stud Viper conversion.

95 ft/lbs is WAY to much for that size stud, no matter what alloy of steel they are made of.
That much torque would impart too much stretch into the stud and would casue the stud to work harden after torquing making it brittle and susceptable to stress cracks or shearing.
The studs don't last forever, and using an impact wrench is the best way to destroy a stud or any fastener for that matter. There is a tool called a breaker bar that is designed for removing tight fasteners.
