It's all in how you setup your car to dissipate the heat & feed in cooler air. It's always going to be a problem. The engine bay stays hot nearly year round.
its all driver too... new gts are running from high 13s to low 14s stock. thats with a 5spd. im guessing thats what that gt was, a 5spd. no way the car is that slow. next, these are contours... they werent made to drag race.. traction is always going to be a problem with front wheel drive. heat does hurt ets.. ive been at the track a couple weeks back when it was 101 degrees out. everyone i talked to said on average they were 3 tenths slower that day then a cooler day.

99 svt contour
-its fast. period.
91 mustang gt
-its faster. period.
86 Buick Grand National
- its way faster, double period!

I ran my car here in OKC recently (a few weekends ago) it was my first time, and it was hot and humid. I wound up running a 15.516 @ 90.21 mph. Not too bad considering my car is supposed to do like 15.2 stock. All I have is cat-back, and K&N. BTW... where do you put the bags of ice before you run??? I mean after you take them off of your manifold, do you put them in your trunk??? confused
