A2Steve,

How difficult was it to prep the motor??? I'm debating whether to buy the sho shop "prepped" 3L or a straight from the factory 3L.

From what others have said, it doesn't sound hard but I'm having a difficult time grasping the concepts.

What shop manuals did you use during the swap???

Prep was pretty easy. Grind the crank down to clear the input shaft on the tranny, fill three holes, and as a last-minute surprise, grind off a flange where the alternator should mount.

I was worried about figuring out which holes needed filling before I did the swap, but once you've got them both sitting side by side, it's really obvious.

I used the Ford shop manual on CD, with occasional reference to the Chiltons book.

A2Steve,

It reads like you would recommend just buying the 3L Short Block from Bill Jenkins since the prep work is rather straight forward and the price is excellent. How long did it take for the block to get to your doorstep???

I would hate to spend an additional $500 bucks for something I can easily do myself.

Shipping took about a week.
You could also talk to Brad Noon - I don't know what kind of commitments he has now, but he's starting his own 3L recondition-prep service.

A2Steve, I spoke with Brad and he doesn't have anything available at this time but will in the future. Unfortunately, I have to get my car back up and running soon. I'm a little torn between doing the prep work myself or buying the sho shop prepped engine. I haven't worked on engines before so I have no clue as to what part of the crank has to be grounded off and how you go about filling the water passages and additional oil galleys with JB Weld. It sounds simple but I wish I could see some pictures of the work. I don't want to take the cheap way out and get myself in trouble and destroy a brand new engine trying to do my own prep work and I don't want to spend a lot more money on something I am fully capable of doing myself. I thought this was an easy decision but it's stressing me out.
