I tried a search and was unsuccessful. Why would the struts wear out faster with a new set of springs? Since the springs would be providing less suspension travel because of the lowered ride height and increased in stiffness wouldnt that make the strut wear longer since it doesnt have to move as much. What am I missing. Just as a back up; they dont reccomend changing shocks or struts on Volkswagens in the driver gear catalog when up grading to their sport springs(which I would imagine are somewhat stiffer as well as being lower). Please give me the explanation behind why the struts would wear out faster. Thanks Steve

From what i "heard", it's because the struts are working in a smaller area. when it's stock, it's working in the area it was made for. But with drop springs it's working in a smaller area, and therefore working harder. This is just throwing an answer. I'm not sure if i'm right.

from what i understand the stock struts arent valved stiff enough for the new springs, if im wrong someone correct me

It has a lot to do with the rate of travel between the stock and aftermarket springs.

It is from the position of the valving inside the struts. The piston is nowhere near where it was designed to be with lowered springs. High performance aftermarket struts are designed with more tolerance for the position of the piston in relation to the valves.

Big Jim and Corey gave good explanations already.
You need struts that are designed to work on a lowered car. Plain and simple. If you like you could install springs, run your car for about 8k miles, then have to do the whole job allll over again to replace your broken struts. Best just to get it over with and do it all at the same time.

I think SVT#95 is asking exactly how the struts wear out faster. What is the failure mechanism? Not that I doubt that it does happen, I'm also curious how they wear out with higher spring rates. If the experts don't chime in maybe we could take a look at that "how stuff works" web site to see what the makings of a regular shock and strut are like and figure out some possibilities.

Ok so what wears out? The valving? The seals? How come you can put stiffer struts on a car and dont need stiffer springs? Are the struts actually shorter so that they work better with the shorter springs. This is all what doesnt make sense. I mean a guy driving a SVT with a 300 pound sub box in the trunk which would lower it and inch or more probably doesnt need to replace his struts every 8k.
