I was thinking about just cutting the springs because i am only going to have my 97 contour gl for a few months, maybe until christmas. Is this a bad idea?

Why bother,

You have to take the whole shock spring assembly apart to cut the springs anyway. Just buy a used set of eibachs form the want adds on contour.org.

Aside from that, they will never fit right if you cut them and you may be risking your life or worse yet someone elses.......
