I've seen much discussion about these "upgraded" end links. Well just recently i did a ground control install on a 2001 cougar.

First off the nut you need to hold with a wrench to remove the end link from the strut is 15mm and not 17mm like mine was on my 2000 cougar. Next looking at the end link it looks MUCH strong then mine do, and the end bushings were integrated into the bar. Anyhow a quick search for this part says they are less than 20$ each from your local dealer, not sure if anyone wants to investigate this but it may be worth a shot.

I know the endlinks you are talking about. If you get replacement endlinks now, they are all like this. The shaft is actually cast of aluminum, rather than steel, and are a very sturdy looking design.

I recently installed the 'new' endlinks that BAT is carrying now. IIRC they are standard equipment on the 2001 Mondeos so they're probably the same part as what you found on the new Cougar. Maybe not, but I bet they're the same. There are some pics in my ofoto.com account, which you can get to from this link:
