If it's the cat, it'll be warranty so fix is free.
I'd say up in Michigan after a couple of years with road salt it's going to be a big PITA to get the old cat off, so it'll be easier to have the shop fix it than it would be to high flow it yourself.
When mine totally crumbled I got lots of hissing / whooshing and could barely limp over 20 - 30 mph. I started with just hissing and slight power loss, and within 1-2 weeks it was more or less crippled.
