Hi, I am new to the news group. I am not really an auto enthusias. I have a 98 mercury mystique. I notice when I turn at high speed, there seems to be way too much body roll. Is there any good way to remedy this problem, for a reasonable price? (less than $200) I read about installing sway bars and shock towers and stuff. Are they difficult to install by myself? Any recommendations will be appreciated. Thanks.

There are plenty of ways to get rid of body roll. Lowering springs, sway bars, etc. If you are looking to keeping it as stock as possible, I would go with the sway bar. There is a rear sway bar in the Group Buy section (Aussie Bar) that loweres the amount of body roll in the rear. You would probably be looking around $150-160 for that part. If you go with that one, I have heard that you must lower the gas tank a few inches to get it in, but other then that, it shouldn't be difficult. I plan on installing the one I ordered. A strut tower bar will keep the car's body from twisting when you corner hard. I haven't priced one personally, but others on here have them. I hope this helped!

I believe all 'tours and probably all 'tiques have a rear sway bar. The aftermarket ones are made stronger and are more effective. A rear strut brace was real helpful in taming my rear end tipping and was easy to intall in the trunk. Another mod I put in to stiffen the rear was to replace the sway bar bushings with polyurethane ($15) and replaced all the rubber spacers on the sway bar links with aluminum bushings. ($5)

($5) This does NOT stiffen the rear, it purely removes some compliance from the rear suspension thus make it more responsive. The body roll would be the same, trust me! Upgraded sway bar is the way to go, and not just because I made it. It's just what you have to do to remove body roll (other than add stiffere springs and shocks) and has been proven in the years and years of automobile design and auto racing. Got to the groupbuy section and order an Aussi Bar from Terry Haines. They are oly $130, and I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed, not one person who has bought the bar, has!

Hi, thanks for the advice. What kind of tools do I need to install the Aussie bar, or any sway bar in general? I am not very mechanically proficient, and I don't own a lot of tools either. And what sway bar size should I get for decent handling?

Sorry, but rear sway bar poly bushings made a noticable difference on my car. If you are on a budget, i'd try this first. If you decide to go hardcore afterwards, you`ll only be out about 15$ more. If you do go with the stazzi bar, you should use the brackets supplied with the bar and have them welded.

I also believe that if you want serious improvement you will need to install a larger rear sway bar. You usually don't want to mess with the front sway bar on a front wheel drive car because it is really easy to upset the understeer/oversteer character unless you really know what you are doing and are willing to experiment.
