Jsmith and all,

I've been itchin to construct an intake pipe. I've got some ideas but I want your input. What are the pipe dimensions at the ends? 60mm-70mm? What do those measurements convert to in English?

What are your thoughts about using actual exhaust piping like this guy did?

Intake

Specifically these pics:

Also using the max size diameter piping to allow for the gromets and the minimal tubing masses in the intake pipe and funneling down at the throttle pipe, like this:

Is there any danger in using aluminized steel in the pipe?

Any input would be great, maybe we can come up with a list of materials and a how-to.

my pipe I made is aluminized steel. I don't think that theres reason to be concerned about the aluminum flaking off since it doesn't flake off exhaust pipes.

I have no idea what the size of the pipes are in metric, but when I built mine I used an exhasut pipe adapter. 3"OD - 2 1/2"OD then I bought an adapter where one side was 2 1/2 ID which slips over the 2 1/2 OD side. I cut the other end of the adapter off and welded the cut piece right over the small end of tha adapter effecticely increasing its outside diameter. Once that was done I cut the tube to length leaving room for about 1/4" gap between both the TB and the MAF.

Idealy you want a tube that is 3" OD on one end and 2 1/2 ID on the other end. The inside diameters of both ends of the tube are the exact size or slightly larger than the bores of the MAF and TB respectively.

I thought about using gromets to seal the tubes to the intake pipe. That would likely be fine since the tube is just a connection betweent the MAF and the TB and it is not subjected to high or low pressures. I decided to weld everything becasue it ensures a perfect seal and it is much stronger than a gromet. Becase if air leaks through a gromet or any place on the tube it will be air leaking in that has not been metered by the MAF.

Jay can you post some pics or email me at malone3 *@* gis.net? I bought a 2 1/2" pipe today and as had a thought today about sleeving the inside of the current rubber pipe. Any thoughts?

Jay, the 2" rubber fit over the 2 1/2" ID Pipe? I went to lowes today looking for a 2 1/2" rubber hose but that is not a standard tubing size. I did however see a 3" to 2" adatper, and if the 2" fits over the TB than I'll be psyched cuz I'll just get a 3"x3" Fernco a 3" exhaust pipe, gromets for the inlets and a 3"x2" Fernco reduction tube.

when you put the fernco over the MAF and the 3" pipe you will at first be bummed becasue it will fit like a broom stick in a barrel, but my friend who is a pluber reassured me and said it will fit. I closed down the clamps and low and behold it fits. The 2 1/2 fernco I used to connect between the small end of the tube and the trottle body they fit tight, infact I had a difficult time because the fit was so tight, but finally a thin film of vasoiline did the trick.

Because of size limitations I was able to use the entire 2 1/2 fernco on the small end of the pipe, but for the large end where I used the 3" fernco I had to cut it in half. I cut it exactly in half and it fit pretty good. The tough part is cutting it. I tried a razor and it broke, I tried a utility knife and I almost slaughtered myself, so I used a hacksaw. What I ended up doing to ensure a nice straight cut was to remove the clamps and put the adapter in a vise and clamp it down all the way, then cut the adapter. I used a 32 teeth per inch balde and it made a clean cut, I just removed all the burrs and crap by just yanking them off.
