Well 2 weeks ago my check engine light came on. I went to the dealer and they said my oxygen sensors were bad. I refused the work, and they reset my light. I still plan on getting it done, but its been two weeks and the light has not come back on, and the car seems to be running fine! Could it have been a fluk in the sensor? Also would the o2 sensor have an effect on gas milage, and the engine idle at a stop?
Please advise

Yes to both.It could be a fluke or bad connection and yes the 02's control the mixture.

I think I might have the same problem now...I started my car up last night and the check engine light came on..This morning had the same thing then went off this afternoon..I'm guessing its the o2 sensors..Is that something that could be repaired easily under warranty even with mods on the car??
Thanks

I was told by a Ford dealer that it would cost around $225. $130 for the sensor the rest for the work.
I refused the work. I will see if I can do it myself.
Quite frankly, the oxygen sensor should be on the list with "things to replace" like brake pads and such.
That or they need to build them to last much longer.

I replaced my Bank-1 Sensor-1 O2 sensor… 2 weeks ago. I did not remove the coil pack I just worked around it. It took me about an hour and I got an O2 sensor (Bosch w/ lifetime guarantee) from AutoZone for $65.00
The kicker… Next tank of gas I picked up 30miles per tank. I went from 240 miles to 270 miles before the gaslight comes on!

Terry or anyone,
Could you have a faulty O2 sensor without getting a CEL or memory code? I've been meaning to replace my two sensors for the longest time, but without a fault code....why bother?
Just curious. Thanks!

Yes, they degrade in a linear manner and the threshold for CEL or memory code allows it to be pretty bad before a CEL or code is stored. Put another way, the sensor has varying degrees of good to bad and the computer can only tell you that it's good or bad..not "how good" or "how bad". Brian Originally posted by tim935:

For those who had the o2 sensor related CEL. Once triggered has the CEL stayed on or does it cycle on and off? I just fixed an air filter leak but which was triggering the CEL. The light was on alot more frequently, now I think I have a bad o2 sensor code.

My CEL came on last week and I confirmed it was P1131 (bank 1 - sensor 1 shows lean). We reset the code, and since then the CEL has cycleed on/off a couple of times (about 200 mi. on, 50 mi. off... I drove HOU-DAL-HOU last weekend). So, in my experience, the answer is "yes."
BTW, finally got a Bosch O2 sensor yesterday, and I hope to put it in today.
