Check your TPS{throttle position sensor}. Or just try to reset your computer. I think being electronically controlled trans that sensors and the computer tell it when to shift. Mine always downshifts to quickly, but it is in the programming, no? I am fixin to have my atx re-done, if I can find anything out about shift points and what controls them, I will let you know.
Mine pulled this stunt shortly after an engine cleaning. Wouldn't shift till late, then BANG, hello second, no third, no second oh, ok, third... (Almost shook the dash out!) Reset the computer and the problem went away.
Since the computer controlled ATX "learns" your driving style to set shift points accordingly & since your battery connections went flaky , resetting the computer by disconnecting the battery for a while should clear up the problem.
Is the smoke alarm in your house also known as the "dinner bell"?
Check your throttle linkage for a THIRD Cable. This cable would be on the OPPOSITE side of the throttle cam. It would NOT be connected on the same side as your Cruise and Accelerator pedal. This would be the Transmission Kick Down Cable. If the cable is frayed and not returning to the REST position, it is holding the kickdown throttle in the transmission in the OPEN position, which keeps your transmission in a lower gear. You will need to disconnect and REPLACE this cable. Don't disconnect it until you get a NEW Cable. Once you disconnect the linkage in the transmission from the cable, if you drop the linkage inside the transmission, you will need to DROP the pan to get it back.
