I have 37K on my SVT and am thinking of doing some preventive work on the cooling system at 40K. Thinking of having a new waterpump (metal),thermostat, and coolant flush done. Good idea?? If so where can I get a waterpump with a metal blades instead of the plasic crap Ford loves to put in. Should I go to a dealer for this type of work?? Thanks

Autozone sells the pump with the metal impeller, if you do a search, I know someone listed the part number.

I'm doing the exact same work, although my WP is already gone, so the car is just sitting in my garage. I wish I had done it ahead of time!

If you look throught the how-to and all the previous posts, you'll see that the work is really straightforward.

I bought my metal impeller pump from Murray's. I can't recall the name of the company, but if you're interested, I can check my records over the weekend. Send me an email at barrywolf@mac.com if you're interested.

I just took apart my waterpump this weekend and lo and behold, the impeller was in three pieces. The how-to directions were great, no problems taking everything apart. You should do fine.

for you folks who have done the AutoZone pump, I have a question for you. I haven't had to do a w/p in about16 years. Do you still goo up the gasket with Permatex, if so any particular type? I don't remember seeing that mentioned in the Haynes manual.

Thanks,
T.

I would have to say NO! DO NOT "goo up the gasket"! When I changed my H2O pump I did use just a very thin layer on the sealing surface of the pump, but just enough to hold the gasket in place. I have had no sealing problems.

Permatex is NOT required nor recommended. When replacing the WP make sure you purchase a new seal.

I just lost my waterpump on Friday. I probably should have done the same thing, change it earlier on as a preventative maintenance measure. In any event, it's costing me $500 to replace it at the dealer. I've never changed a waterpump before but is it as easy as everyone says it is???

Nothing is real easy the first time! The second time takes half the time and after that your an expert! Not that I have changed or needed to change water pump yet, but any questions and a haynes manual and your off! I am not sure how well the haynes manual covers water pumps as I have not looked at it yet, but its pretty good to have! You can purchase one at hardware and other parts stores! There should also be a procedure in the FAQ!
