Hey guys, when in gear my shifter is so loose it's like it's in neutral. Any ideas on what it would take to clean this up some? I'm hoping it's just some bushings or something. Any help would be appreciated.

It's most likely the connector bushings on the cables or the ball joint getting sloppy. You have to pull the shift boot cover off and examine how much play there is right there at the ball and also where the cables connect up. Then there is also the cable connections at the trans.
I would start inside and work your way outside.
My guess is the cables. Do you have more side to side play in one direction(forward and back) than the other (side to side) or vice versa?

YOu may just have loose bolts on the shifter. Pop off the boot and use a torx bit to check it out. The stock shifter was always a bit sloppy for my taste. Try a B+M and you won't be sorry.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll look try some of these suggestions this weekend. Warmonger, the majority of the play is side-to-side or right to left as opposed to up-and-down. Po-Jay, I already have a B&M and have had it for over a year now. Thanks again guys.

Hey Po-Jay

You might want to get the shifter re-welded before it goes out. I was the first to learn the hard way. mad

Thanks dude, I will look into it. I have installed and un-installed the shifter 3 or more times, due to various tranny warranty work. I assumed that they (Ford) would (try to)void my warranty if I left it in during the shop visit. I haven't noticed the problem, but I wasn't worried about it then. I assume that the piece in question is the ball and post that attaches to the shift linkage via snap joint... Right???

Correct! The new welds Terry had put in place made shifting tight and easy. I suggest welding it soon...really soon!
