If you're getting CELs with codes indicating O2 sensor problems, JCWhitney has platinum tip O2 sensors for $53 each. (#13ZX2749N) With 94K miles and intermittent 172 & 176 codes for the last 9 months, I decided it was time for replacement. Thanks to all the great info available on CEG, the job was pretty painless and took about 2 hours. You need to splice the Ford connector onto the new sensors using a supplied splice kit. The Ford connector has 4 wires and the sensor 3 wires. Leave the gray connector wire tucked into the harness or cut it off. The sensor uses a chassis ground and does not need the 4th wire. (Splice white-white and black-black)

My CELs are completely gone! I could not get a blink out the CEL after 35 miles of heavy foot-in-the-carpet driving. Engine is slightly smoother, but no noticable performance increase.

If I was going to replace all of my O2 sensors, how many would I order and does this require a special tool to remove the O2 sensor?

Chris,
You can put a deposit on the tool you need for changing sensors(special socket) at Autozone. No charge for rental, you get deposit back when you return tools. $16.50 for 3 sizes in a small case where I went.

what brand are the sensors? is jc whtiney a parts store in the usa or would i have to order them on line? if i could find the same brand up here it would be great because ordering anything out of the usa is expensive once shipping, duty and taxes are paid.

The sensors are marketed by Tomspec Co. They looked identical to the originals in construction, weight and country of origin (Japan). JCWhitney is mostly mail order/web but I believe they still have a store in Chicago. For a 95 you only need 2 sensors. For 97 or 98+ you need 4 sensors.

One more question. Is this a job that I can handle or is it better left to a real mechanic? Not interested in doing a wheel bearing type repair but I do like tinkering with my car. Got a Haynes manual.

Chris,
My '95 Duratec five speed only has two sensors, you have four. The front one is fairly easy, the one on the back manifold can be a bear! It took me about 30 minutes to do both using ramps and the right tools. Most dealers will want $60-$75 EACH to install them. Let the car cool overnight and its not that bad a job.

Chris,
If you can change a spark plug you can change an oxygen sensor. The back one is easier if you connect the wire up top THEN drop it down and install it.

Do you remove it and install it from below the car and do the wire crimping from above the engine. Anyway, I changed the 3 O2 sensors that I could and got lucky, so far. It has been started 3 times since I reconnected the + battery cable and no CEL yet. Regardless of wether it's fixed or not I'm replacing the last one too. Been living with this CEL for a year now. I'm hoping it's finally gone.

Order SMP brand O2 sensors from http://www.expressautoparts.com -- $50 each and they have the Ford connectors already on them, no splicing/cutting required, and they're the exact same make as the OE sensors.
