Most "low end" cars don't have it. My 2000 came with one and it is one of the last ones to be built. So I don't think it was decontented per say!

Bottom line, engine should not glow orange regardless of hood insulation. Could your cats be clogged???

Exactly, it shouldn't glow. I'm guessing it's probably glowing more towards the exhaust manifolds. Take a look and it means your cats are bad but you should see/notice a difference in performance too.
On another note, my 98 Mystique didn't come with a hood liner. 92K miles and underneath and on the outside/top are as good as new. No damage or a hint.

So from all of this i understand that it could not be that bad of a thing to take off the mat right? Well i mean at least it could not hurt to try it.

I think he was kidding about the engine glowing orange...I'd think it would seize before that happned.
I seriously doubt that any discoloration will occur...on either side of the hood. If that were the case, you'd see all these low buck cars driving around with dark spots in the middle of their hood! Any discoloration on the underside, might be dirt that would normally accumulate on the liner that would go unnoticed because it's black to begin with.

Mine didnt have one when I purchased the car and Ill be a monkeys unkle if I have ever had any problems. In fact My car runs pretty cool ..maybe thats why?
